Sea Ray SPX 190 Bowrider — Information and Specifications

The Sea Ray SPX 190 is the smallest boat Sea Ray builds, and it is the model that most clearly shows what you are paying the brand premium for. At roughly 19 ft 2 in (5.84 m) overall on a 7 ft 9 in (2.36 m) beam, it sits in exactly the same size bracket as the volume-brand 19-footers, yet the hardware, the upholstery foam, the drainage and the deck non-skid are all a visible step above. It is the bowrider you buy when the budget stretches a little further and you plan to keep the boat for years rather than seasons.

Power is a single four-stroke outboard, typically 115 hp through 150 hp, hung on a moulded transom pod that keeps the propeller well clear of the swim platform. On a hull of around 2,600 lb (1,180 kg) dry, a 150 hp outboard gives genuinely lively performance: mid-30-knot top speeds in flat water, a comfortable 22-24 knot cruise and the kind of clean hole shot that pulls a single skier up without drama. The outboard also frees the whole stern for seating and makes winterising and servicing far simpler than a sterndrive.

Seating is the SPX 190's quiet strength. Twin bow lounges run forward to a filler cushion that closes the walk-through into a full sun pad, the helm and companion positions are proper swivel buckets with flip-up bolsters, and the aft bench converts to a sun lounge across the full beam. Sea Ray's diamond-quilted vinyl, generous bolster padding and moulded stainless grab rails are what owners notice after a long day aboard, and the cockpit sole drains properly rather than pooling under the seats.

Practical details are handled well for a boat this size. There is a deep in-floor locker long enough for skis and wakeboards, dry storage under both bow lounges, a lockable console compartment, moulded cup holders throughout and a marine stereo with cockpit speakers. A wide swim platform with a stainless telescoping ladder makes the outboard layout easy to swim from, and the optional arch or wake tower adds board racks and a proper high tow point for wakeboarding.

On the road the SPX 190 is a genuine single-vehicle boat. On its trailer the rig comes in under about 3,900 lb (1,770 kg), so a mid-size SUV tows it legally and comfortably, and the beam launches at any public ramp. Storage in a standard garage is realistic with the tower folded.

Against the value brands the SPX 190 costs more up front, and the counter-argument is resale: Sea Ray holds money about as well as anything in the segment, so the real cost of ownership over five years is closer than the sticker price suggests. If you want a compact, easy-to-tow bowrider that still feels like a premium boat, this is the one to start with — and the natural step up from here is the SPX 210 when the family grows.

This week we are putting the Bayliner Bayliner DX2000 in the spotlight, and it earns the spot. At 20 ft 2 in (6.16 m) long on a 8 ft (2.44 m) beam, this is a bowrider that reads the water well and still feels roomy enough for a full day out. A 20-foot deck-boat-width bowrider with outboard power and a huge social cockpit. Power comes from 115-150 hp mercury fourstroke outboard through a outboard package, and the fibreglass hull keeps the ride settled when the afternoon breeze puts a chop on the surface.

Seating is rated for 8 people, so there is space for family, friends, towels, eskies and the tow rope without anyone climbing over gear. Owners tend to buy it for family, water ski, leisure — which is exactly where it shines. Fuel is 30 us gal (114 l), and on the second-hand and new market you should expect to land somewhere around US$42,000 - US$58,000 new depending on hours, trailer and options.

Our full deep dive covers the layout in detail: bow lounge comfort, helm ergonomics, the rear entertaining area, storage that actually swallows a weekend, plus standard features, popular options and honest notes on where the boat compromises. If the Bayliner DX2000 is on your shortlist, start there — and check back next week, because the featured boat changes every week as we complete more full model reviews.

Which Bowriders Need the Least Maintenance?

Which Bowrider Boats Have the Least Maintenance? — Images Created by www.Bowrider-Boats.com

Maintenance is where boat ownership either stays fun or turns into a chore. Two boats of the same size can differ enormously in how many hours and dollars they demand each season, and almost all of that difference comes down to three choices: hull material, drive type and how much complexity you buy. A painted or bare aluminium hull is the low-maintenance benchmark. There is no gelcoat to oxidise, no osmosis risk, and abrasion at the ramp is cosmetic rather than structural. A hose-down after saltwater use, an anode check and an annual inspection of welds and rivets covers most of it. Fibreglass asks for more. Gelcoat needs washing, polishing and waxing to stay glossy, and neglected gelcoat chalks within a few seasons. Chips need filling before water reaches the laminate. It is not difficult work, but it is recurring work. Polyethylene and thermoplastic bowriders sit in a category of their own: essentially maintenance-free skins that shrug off knocks, at the cost of styling options and resale depth. An outboard hangs outside the boat, tilts clear of the water when parked, and needs an annual service that is broadly comparable to a car service: oil, filters, plugs, gear oil, impeller and anodes. Nothing about it…
