How Haines Hunter became a boat builder

Haines Hunter has been building boats in Australia since 1959, and like almost every long-lived boat builder the story starts small: a workshop, a handful of tradespeople, and local customers who wanted something better than what they could buy. Growth came from reputation rather than advertising — boats that survived hard local use, and owners who told their friends. As volumes grew, hand-built one-offs gave way to tooled production, and the company moved from making boats to engineering them: hull moulds or jigs, repeatable laminate or welding schedules, dealer support and a proper spare parts chain.

The move into bowriders was a natural one. Dealers kept asking for a boat that a family could grow into rather than out of, and the open bow answered it. Haines Hunter adapted its existing hulls to the open-bow format, then began designing specifically for it — walk-through screens, convertible cushions, under-seat lockers and transom lounges — and bowriders have been a core part of the range ever since.

How Haines Hunter builds its boats

Fibreglass is the material that made the modern bowrider possible. Moulded hulls allow sculpted bow lounges, integrated liners, flush hatches and the smooth compound curves that give the class its ride and its looks. Hand-laid or vacuum-infused laminates, foam or composite stringer grids and moulded interior liners are all standard practice here, and the result is a boat that is quieter under way, drier at speed and far more comfortable at rest than any flat-panel hull.

Haines Hunter hulls are the benchmark for offshore ride quality in Australia, and the brand's reputation was built on serious deep-V designs that handle open ocean far better than their length suggests. In recent years Haines Hunter has brought that hull engineering to family-focused layouts, with bowrider and sports models such as the 545R, 585R and the SF and SS ranges offering forward seating, convertible cushions, walk-through screens and premium fit-out on top of a genuinely offshore-capable bottom. Deadrise is high, entries are fine and the boats stay dry and planted when conditions turn — the reason so many owners keep buying the brand for decades. Build quality is excellent, prices are firmly premium, and resale is among the strongest of any boat brand in Australia, with well-kept older hulls still fetching remarkable money. For families who want bowrider comfort and sociability without giving up the ability to cross a bar or fish wide, Haines Hunter is the aspirational choice.

The models Haines Hunter is best known for

Ask anyone at a boat ramp to name a Haines Hunter and you will hear 545R, 585R, SS 675. These are the boats that built the brand's reputation, and each one is documented on its own page on this site with specifications, layout notes, engine options and a real-world price guide.

The Haines Hunter 545R is the model most buyers start with, and it sets the template for the rest of the range: open bow seating, a walk-through windscreen, a helm and companion seat amidships and a convertible transom lounge. Moving up the range adds beam and freeboard rather than just length, and beam is what you actually feel — a wider boat carries more people comfortably, stays flatter at rest and gives deeper lockers under the seats. Trim levels layer on top of the hull sizes, so the same hull can be bought as a plain family boat or fully optioned with tower, sound system and premium upholstery.

Haines Hunter is particularly recognised for 545R, 585R, SS 675 — and the full list of every model, series and range we have documented from this builder appears further down this page.

Markets, dealers and where these boats sell

Haines Hunter sells mainly into Australia and New Zealand, where boating means beach launching, estuary and offshore fishing, ski runs on inland rivers, and long tows behind a family four-wheel drive. That market shapes the boats: high sides, self-draining decks, rugged fittings and trailers designed for salt water and steep ramps. Dealer coverage across the eastern states, South Australia and Western Australia is strong, and resale within Australia is consistently good because the brand is a known quantity at every ramp.

Being a Australia builder matters more than it sounds. Boats are designed around the water their designers use, so the Haines Hunter range reflects Australia conditions in freeboard, deadrise, cockpit drainage and seating priorities. If you boat somewhere similar, the boat will feel like it was designed for you — because it was.

What makes Haines Hunter significant

Australia's most respected fibreglass hull, now offered in true bowrider layouts. Longevity is its own achievement in this industry: boat building is brutally cyclical, and a company trading since 1959 has survived multiple recessions, fuel shocks, ownership changes and complete generational shifts in what buyers want from a family boat. That kind of continuity is why parts, dealer knowledge and used-boat values all stay healthy for this brand.

Older Haines Hunter V17 and V19 hulls have a devoted following and are frequently restored and re-powered rather than replaced.

The brand is known in the trade for 545R and 585R, and among owners for something less measurable: boats that get used every weekend instead of sitting on the driveway. That is the highest compliment a family bowrider can be paid.

Living with a Haines Hunter bowrider

Day to day, a Haines Hunter bowrider is judged on the small things. How quickly can two people get it off the trailer and back on again? Where do the wet towels, the ski rope and the cooler live? Is there shade at midday, and somewhere dry for phones and keys? Moulded fibreglass liners with flush hatches make the boat quick to clean and easy to keep looking new. These boats are set up so a single adult can launch, retrieve and pack up without help, which in practice is the difference between a boat that gets used most weekends and one that stays in the driveway.

Running costs are modest for the class. Modern four-stroke outboards are frugal, quiet and simple to service, and a day of cruising with a couple of ski sets rarely troubles the fuel budget. Insurance, storage and trailer registration are the same as any comparable trailer boat, and because Haines Hunter is a recognised name, both insurers and finance companies value the boats without argument.

Buying a Haines Hunter bowrider

This is luxury-end production, and the price reflects build hours rather than length. Hand-laid or infused laminates, tight tolerances, marine-grade hardware, deep upholstery and finish standards closer to a yacht than a runabout all cost money to achieve. Resale is the strongest in the class, which softens the real cost of ownership considerably over a five to ten year hold.

Whatever you buy, inspect it the same way. Check the transom for flex with the drive or outboard lifted, tap the floor and stringers for softness, look hard at the bilge for staining and weeping, run the engine to temperature and confirm steering and trim work through their full travel. Upholstery seams and covers are the first things to fail on a boat stored outside, and they are also the most expensive cosmetic items to put right. On fibreglass, look for gelcoat crazing around fittings and stress lines radiating from the transom or trailer supports.

Finally, buy the layout rather than the badge. Sit in the bow, sit at the helm, sit on the transom lounge and imagine a full day aboard with your own family. Haines Hunter builds luxury fibreglass bowriders with outboard and stern drive power, and if that combination matches the water you use and the way you use it, this is a brand that will serve you for years and sell on well when you are ready for the next one.

This week we are putting the Bayliner Bayliner DX2000 in the spotlight, and it earns the spot. At 20 ft 2 in (6.16 m) long on a 8 ft (2.44 m) beam, this is a bowrider that reads the water well and still feels roomy enough for a full day out. A 20-foot deck-boat-width bowrider with outboard power and a huge social cockpit. Power comes from 115-150 hp mercury fourstroke outboard through a outboard package, and the fibreglass hull keeps the ride settled when the afternoon breeze puts a chop on the surface.

Seating is rated for 8 people, so there is space for family, friends, towels, eskies and the tow rope without anyone climbing over gear. Owners tend to buy it for family, water ski, leisure — which is exactly where it shines. Fuel is 30 us gal (114 l), and on the second-hand and new market you should expect to land somewhere around US$42,000 - US$58,000 new depending on hours, trailer and options.

Our full deep dive covers the layout in detail: bow lounge comfort, helm ergonomics, the rear entertaining area, storage that actually swallows a weekend, plus standard features, popular options and honest notes on where the boat compromises. If the Bayliner DX2000 is on your shortlist, start there — and check back next week, because the featured boat changes every week as we complete more full model reviews.

Bowrider vs Deck Boat: Which Should You Buy? — Images Created by www.Bowrider-Boats.com

Bowriders and deck boats look related, and many buyers cross-shop them. The difference sits entirely in the bow: a bowrider tapers to a pointed entry, while a deck boat carries its beam right forward to a broad, blunt bow. That one change alters space, ride and personality completely. The deck boat wins on volume. Carrying full beam to the bow creates a large forward lounge area, often with a walk-through gate and space for four or five people up front. Total capacity on a deck boat is typically two to four higher than a bowrider of the same length. The bowrider trades that volume for a narrower, more sheltered bow. Its forward lounges are more intimate, better protected from spray, and more comfortable at speed because they sit further inboard. A pointed bow parts waves. That is why bowriders ride more comfortably in a chop, stay drier at speed and handle open water better. Deck boats with blunt bows can pound and throw spray when conditions get lumpy, though modern deck boat hulls are far better than early designs. Deck boats are more stable at rest, thanks to that carried-forward beam, and they plane easily. For calm lakes and rivers they are excellent. For coastal…
